5 DESTINATIONS TO CELEBRATE #WORLD ELEPHANT DAY WITH SERENA HOTELS
African elephants are the world’s largest land mammals and among one of the most intelligent creatures with complex consciousness, excellent memory, and emotions. These mammals roam freely in Africa’s savannahs and some of the most popular national parks and game reserves. In Africa, elephants share the same ecosystem with human beings and share quite a myriad of similarities with the homosapiens; this may be one of the reasons why elephants have a strong cultural significance with human beings. Despite their large size, elephants are known as ‘Gentle Giants’ and scientists refer to them as ‘keystone species as they play a significant role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitat.
Conservation efforts to save and protect these majestic creatures have paid off in the last two decades, as the populations are now stable and growing. On 12th August every year, the world celebrates all efforts to protect and preserve the elephants.
SERENA HOTELS CAMPS IN KENYA RETAIN ECO-TOURISM GOLD CERTIFICATION
The Serena Hotels’ Camp portfolio in Kenya that includes, Sweetwaters Serena Camp and Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp have retained their Gold Eco-Rating Certification by the Eco-Tourism Society of Kenya since the year 2013 and 2015 respectively. The Certification program is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council since 2016 and is at the same level as other international standards across the globe.
Sweetwaters Serena Camp and Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp went through an in-depth biennial on-site audit that resulted in the Gold Eco-rating Certification. A ‘Gold Eco-rating’ is awarded to facilities that have shown innovation in responsible resource use, environmental conservation, community empowerment, cultural preservation and promotion, and holistic business practices.
