Selous Game Reserve - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Selous is the largest National Park in Africa. Four times the size of Serengeti - covering 55,000sq kms, more than 5% of Tanzania's total area and larger than Switzerland. It possesses a diverse landscape from hot volcanic springs, sporadic lakes, channels from the Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers'.
The Game Reserve was named after Frederick Courtenay Selous, a British explorer and hunter in East Africa who was killed in World War 1 in the Beho region of the reserve. The area has remained one of the untouched gems of Tanzania's national parks and game reserves.
Experience the Lakes of the Selous – Tagalala, Manze and Nzerakela.
There are large populations of elephant in the park. Approximately 70% of Tanzania's elephants are found in this reserve. Other well known animals include the hippo who inhabit the river systems, large herds of buffalo, lion and the area's rare and endangered wild dogs and patrol the Reserve.
Also found here are Nyasaland gnu, brindled gnu, hartebeest, Greater Kudu, sable antelope, eland, reedbuck, bushbuck, waterbuck, warthog, zebras, giraffe, wildebeest, leopard and cheetah are rare. There are over 350 species of birds including African snipe, Bataleur eagle, crested lark, Green-headed oriole, Knob-billed duck, herons, kingfishers, geese and Southern Ground hornbill. Reptiles such as crocodiles and various snakes and lizards are also found.
This evening enjoy a Boat Safari – Exploring the different channels of the Rufiji River system, surrounded by hippos and crocodiles, is an experience of a lifetime! A “water birding” opportunity with a large variety of herons, storks, ducks, stilts & other water birds likely to be observed.
Fishing Expedition on Rufiji River! There are plenty of interesting fish to catch, such as the Big Catfish or Vundu, maybe you can beat the Selous Game Reserve record of 49 KG.
